Winter Break- How to stay relaxed AND engaged

Winter break is an excellent time to de-stress, catch up on sleep, and relax. However, while taking time to rest your brain is healthy and important, it’s also incredibly beneficial to keep your brain active in some way or another. Keeping your student’s brain engaged over break will help limit the brain fog they experience when they return to school, online or in person, in the new year.

Frame learning as a fun activity rather than an assignment.

The last thing any student wants when they’ve just finished a semester is more homework. But don’t fret! There are plenty of activities your child can do solo or with the family that will engage their brain without feeling forced. Activities like journaling, baking, or watching documentaries will keep their brain thinking without being overly draining. On the Lotus Premier Education Group, we have a variety of education resources to engage your student’s brain and make learning more enjoyable!

If you’re learning a foreign language, keep interacting with it.

Change your phone settings to the language you’re learning, or watch TV with subtitles in that language! Language learning is an ongoing process, and if you’re not engaging with a language for an extended period of time, it’s easy to forget what you know or have learned recently.

Read.

Whether it’s a novel, a short story, or even just the news, reading is excellent and important for your brain. Reading maintains and builds the ability to concentrate, introduces new vocabulary, and can be a catalyst for learning about new things or thinking creatively about new ideas. Check out the Lotus Premier Education Group for short stories and discussion questions to go along with them!

Take the time to relax.

Sleeping in, watching TV, and just hanging out (at home or socially distanced!) are all an expected and healthy part of break! After all the hard work you’ve done this term and in these unusual circumstances, rest and relaxation are well deserved. Try not to mess up your sleep schedule TOO much though, or you’ll pay the price when it’s time to go back to school! :)
